Making custom tapes is a fun way to give a little form to your nostalgia, your movie, or just to increase your collection. Please read the following to determine if it’s right for you.
1. I can do a lot of movies. But if I can’t do it or find it, I’ll be transparent about this.
2. I am a very solid self taught designer. However, I do have my limitations. I lean heavily into 1980s and 90s VHS aesthetic, which is a little imperfect and grimy in the best way. If I am unable to meet your needs and make your project, then I will connect you with Michael Glowacki of Exist Design. He is an absolute pro! He can make anything happen for you when it comes to design.
3. Full disclosure: as a general rule, I do not work well with ultra picky people. I will work tirelessly to get you a design that mixes what you want with my own style. But if you are the type that is ultra picky, I am not the person for you. I do not work well in that dynamic. Again, I can refer you to Michael Glowacki of Exist Design, who works well with ultra picky expectations.
4. You will get one chance to receive a mock up, review it, and then request changes.
5. Mutual respect is important for this process. If that doesn’t happen, the tape won’t happen.
6. I do not do pornography or any films that might be especially problematic (ie. Tapes made without consent, hate group propaganda of ANY sort, etc.)
7. Have fun! This is the most inportant part. Yes, I will get you the very best product I can. But I work hard to make this experience an absolute pleasure.
8. Turnaround time is generally 2 weeks. In some cases, particularly around the holidays, it can take up to a month.
9. VHS is an interesting media in that there is a charm to the grimy, grungy, distressed vibe and performance. That being said, imperfections can pop up. Some of this avoidable, some is not. However, if your tape simply doesn’t play well, I will make you a new one. I do not do cash refunds or credits.
10. This is often referred to as functional fan art. And we all know why we use that term. For me, this is a way to get movies that I presume you own onto VHS tapes so that you can have the unique viewing experience and also feel the magic that we felt decades ago when we would watch and collect VHS. However I also respect those who worked hard and spent dough to make their movie. That being said, I do not do bulk quantities.
